Dede, a thirty-something from Indonesia, is a man afflicted with a disfiguring disease that encases his body with thick roots reminiscent of tree bark. On his hands and feet are enormous growths of horn which make him incapable of carrying out even the simplest tasks. His hands are so misshapen that he can no longer work. Although the condition affects mainly his hands and feet, he is covered with smaller growths all over the rest of his body as well.
An American dermatologist, Dr. Gaspari, went to Indonesia to meet Dede, and determined that the young man suffers from the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), or common warts, but due to an abnormality in Dede’s immune system, he is unable to fight them off the way most people successfully do. He is thus unable able to hold down any sort of job, even taking calls for adt orders or simply driving a taxi cab. Below is a video the demonstrates his extreme condition. Although Dr. Gaspari hoped to cure Dede of his affliction with simple vitamin A, surgeons are now looking into options to help remove the growths.
